colleagues, I regret that I cannot see my way to accept the proposal that they should be granted compensation on that account. It is, as you point out, impossible, and, in any event, it would be undesirable, to reopen the old controversy, or to attempt to balance financial loss against the disadvantages of internment, and it would appear to be unlikely that in more than a very few instances the accrued pay of an interned officer has proved to be inadequate to provide reasonable maintenance for his family.
